Child and Family Research Unit
The Child and Family Research Unit (CAFRU), part of WSU Spokane, strives to
meet the needs of high-risk families and the systems that serve them in the
Spokane community and throughout Washington State.
Social, developmental, and health concerns can put a child at risk: Research and evaluation of these areas can inform both policy and practice to improve the lives of children and families. CAFRU’s mission is to develop the theoretical, service outcome, and public policy research and evaluations that improve the lives of children and their families.
CAFRU has created a network of partnerships that integrate the university’s capabilities with the needs of communities. Our core of research programs permit community-based services to provide models for efforts across the nation. Using this partnership principle, we have received numerous grants and contracts to support our services and studies.
Funded areas of study currently include:
- Intimate partner violence preventive education and services
- Reduction of children’s exposure to violence
- Early childhood education and child care quality
- Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS)
- Children at risk of school failure
